Farouk Alawdi is the owner of Two Star Market. Farouk’s grandfather bought the store, decades ago, after moving to California from Michigan, where he and his son worked in the auto industry following their immigration from Yemen in the 1970s.
Today, Two Star is known in the Lower Dimond district for its annual Thanksgiving dinners, where Farouk hosts a gathering outside the store and feeds the community free of charge. Farouk’s father started the tradition during Ramadan some 20 years ago, and it’s still going strong.
